Chinch Bug and Grub Control In Turf
Chinch Bug and Grub damage can be extensive in lawns. With the legislated move to more environmentally friendly lawn care products, we are seeing considerably more damage to turf from Chinch Bugs and Grubs.
One annual application of insect control (or Grub Control) is no longer adequate to control these aggressive and resilient insects. As Chinch bugs continue to hatch over the summer and migrate in from adjacent areas, lawns ideally should be sprayed every 2 weeks. While such an aggressive treatment program is beyond most customers, your lawn can still benefit from a single spraying.
We use only Nova Scotia government-approved chemicals applied with care according to industry standards and government regulations.
We strive to keep abreast of our industry and are dedicated to providing the best possible lawn care services. We are always looking for new products with improved effectiveness coming into the marketplace.
Lawn turf health is influenced by many factors and lawns subjected to lack of water, lack of nutrients, over fertilization, being mowed too short or allowed to become too long, soil acidity issues, or lack of adequate topsoil etc. are less able to withstand stress and the effects of insects. What happens between our visits definitely affects the success of your lawn !

Lawn Care Tips
Remember lawns are living plants and grass planted in poor soil (or inadequate depth of quality topsoil) will struggle. Lawns require high quality soil to a minimum depth of 15cm (6 inches). Many lawn problems start with inadequate quality and / or depth of soil.
We will gladly work with you to achieve a healthy lawn.

- keep lawns well watered in times of low rainfall (lawns need at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water a week).
- water lawns deeply once a week rather than frequent shallow watering
- save water - do not water in the heat of the day
- cut lawns to the optimum length of 6cm to 8cm ( or 2.5-3.25 inches). Lawns cut too short suffer considerable stress and it also promotes weed germination and growth by allowing more sunlight to reach the soil.
- never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade off at a time. If your grass gets too long, cut it in stages to get it back to the correct length.
- fertilize regularly with seasonally appropriate fertilizer
- do not over-fertilize your lawn (if your lawn care services include regular fertilizing, do not fertilize between visits). When it comes to fertilizer more is NOT better !
- core aerate to address soil compaction (occurs over time) to improve drainage and air permeability
- lime to address soil acidity (very common in NS)
- mulch your grass clippings if you have a good mulching mower. Do not leave clumps or a thick layer of grass clippings on your lawn as this can smother grass causing damage
- dethatch - especially important if thatch is thick. Insects favour lawns with thick thatch
- rake leaves off before winter or better still mulch them with your mulching lawn mower and leave on your lawn (but only if you have a good mulching mower that can shred leaves into small pieces). Leaves left on lawns offer insects a safe haven over winter.
